QUILT FOR PEACE

THE RESULTS OF THE QUILT FOR PEACE PROJECT

We are pleased to share with you the three 2023 Quilts for Peace that we created from the images received. As a little reminder, Peace Quilts have been made at different moments throughout history in order to bring people together during difficult times. The goal of this project was to invite people from far reaching places in the world to collaborate together with the sole purpose of creating something beautiful together.

Allison’s Quilt: I chose to use each image submitted five times. Four of these were used mirroring each other to make an abstract symmetrical “quilt square” which is reminiscent of the symmetry found in cloth pattern design. This symmetry is intriguing from afar and as the viewer comes closer to the quilt, the individual image “framed” by a white box becomes apparent and draws the eye in. Click here to view.

Caroline’s Quilt: My quilt was inspired by the Korean “Jogakbo” patchwork style , where pieces of cloth of different sizes and shapes are sewn together. The fabric is often regrouped by zones of color. Each image submitted appears at least once in its entirety and some images appear again in different formats. Click here to view.

Nathalie’s Quilt: It was important to me to have a figurative representation of peace on my quilt. The image that is strong in my mind is a candle. I chose a geometric quilting pattern to distribute the images and also made a virtual “collage” from parts of images to create a candle in the middle of the piece. Click here to view.

These three quilts were printed on cloth so that each square image was 5 cm x 5 cm and were presented during the “Cultural & Artistic Competition for Peace and Korean Reunification” which was held in Paris on April 16th, 2023. The jury, made up primarily of members of the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council (PUAC), awarded the Grand Prize to the Quilt for Peace project.

We would like to send a heartfelt thank you to all of the people who contributed to this collaborative project by submitting a photo – it has been enriching to see how everyone views peace and very meaningful to us to bring these images together. We warmly thank our professor, Estelle Cheon, from Nantes Université, as well as the members of the jury for the opportunity to present this project. We also thank our families and friends who helped us with the website translations and design support, in addition to the logistical support for the printed “quilts” (both receiving them in Paris and the support on the day of the competition). We greatly appreciate your assistance.

THE ORIGIN OF THE PROJECT

The idea for this collaborative project was born out of a group assignment as a part of the Korean Language, Culture & Art program at Nantes Université in France. The request was to produce a piece of art – written – visual – musical – theatrical – which speaks directly of peace.

Peace Quilts have been made at different moments throughout history in order to bring people together during difficult times. The goal of this Quilt for Peace is to invite people from far reaching places in the world to be a part of a project where the sole purpose is to create something beautiful together.
